[15 Oct 2010|10:05am]

It is the middle of October, and it's just now starting to get cool in our new home. When we lived in Ohio, it would already be pretty chilly by now, and I would be complaining about it. But it's still warm and sunny during the daytime here. Still, with the overnight temperatures getting lower, I think it's high time I put on my sweater.

Mr. Bennet's birthday was Sunday, and my Sheila made him a piñata. His birthday was 10-10-10, so at 10:10 AM they went outside to beat the crap out of the piñata with a stick. This seemed like a bizarre thing to do, because my Sheila was working on it every night for about a week. I mean, all that effort, and then they clobbered it with a stick! But when it broke open, all sorts of candy came out, so I guess I understand why they wanted to get inside it so desperately. It's a shame that the candy got stuck in there, though, because it would have been nice to keep the piñata. It looked like a Bud Light beer can :)

On Wednesday we watched the miners get rescued on CNN.com. I looked up Chile on a map and it's way down in South America. It was an exciting thing to watch, and very happy.

We have two pumpkins for Halloween this year. I wonder how we will decorate them. My Sheila and I carved one a few years back--I helped scoop out the seeds!!

If any of my furry friends see this, I hope you and your humans are doing well, and I miss seeing you online :)

Writer's Block: Successful Goal [15 Oct 2010|09:57am]
For millions of Americans, Secretariat was an inspiration. Why do you think his story gives us goosebumps? Do you have a memory of seeing or learning about the magic of Secretariat?

As a toy camel, I am very interested in animal heroes. I don't really know anything about Secretariat except that he was a famous racehorse. This is where Google comes in handy for me, as long as my human doesn't kick me off the computer to play video games. Today, I think I shall learn more about Secretariat. Stories about animal athletes (like racehorses and agility dogs) and stories about animals who help people (like service dogs or pets who warn their families of danger) are my favorite animal hero stories.

Hello out there! This is just a brief Humphrey update. All is well. My human took me to the Dallas Zoo to see some big camels, and I am enjoying a nice, hot summer.

I want my own computer so I can play Family Feud on Facebook more often. And post here. And borrow a credit card and go shopping on eBay and amazon.

You know. Same old, same old.

[ mood | thankful ]

Today is Thanksgiving in the United States. Thanksgiving is a holiday where you think about things that you are thankful for having. Even my human, who is a big humbug about holidays, thinks that the Spirit of Thanksgiving is a good thing. So, without further ado, I will tell you about the things I am thankful for.

I am thankful for my humans, especially my Sheila. My humans take care of me and play with me. They talk to me and give me dates and hug me. Without them, I probably would not have as many fun adventures and see so many exciting things like zoos and baseball games, and I might just be stuck on a shelf all the time. I am thankful for my Sheila and Mr. Bennet and MB & FB, who are my Sheila's parents. They take care of me, and they help each other, and I help them!

I am thankful for my herd, Harvey, Hector, Hiram, Horatio, and Joey. I am thankful for my Webkinz friends and the Andys and all the other toys at my Sheila's house. I am also thankful for Wally and the toys at MB's house. They are good friends, companions, and herdmates.

I am thankful for Dragon Cave and all the dragons that I take care of. It's fun to watch them hatch and grow up into full-grown dragons.

I am thankful for the internet, where I SOMETIMES get to use LiveJournal to talk to friends, and for all the things I can learn about online, and for the Dragons, and the Webkinz. I don't know how people lived without the internet. I mean, I know that you can get information from books at the library, but the internet is quicker and more convenient, so I can look something up as soon as I think of it, instead of having to wait until my Sheila takes me to the library.

I am thankful for infomercials, because they teach me about interesting new products and technology, and they help me think of things to ask Santa for. Last year, for Christmas, I actually got a Magic Bullet Mixer :D And my human and I made milkshakes. Without infomercials, I would not know as much about how to clean even the most stubborn, soaked in stains, and I would not know how to grow my own, natural hair back.

I am thankful for the Weather Channel and weather.com, so I know whether or not my Sheila should carry an umbrella! I am also thankful for the satellite TV on the boat, where I watch Weather Channel and Animal Planet and Disney Channel. Television is fun!

I am thankful for my Sheila's apartment and Mr. Bennet's house and our room on the boat. These are all places where we live and sleep and watch TV and eat and stay warm and comfortable and read books and play games. We are lucky to have nice places to live.

I am thankful for dates and cookies and pizza and other good things to eat. I am thankful for Diet Coke and coffee, because my Sheila would be VERY grumpy without her caffeine.

I am thankful for my little hat and my sweater, which keep me warm in the winter. My Sheila made my little hat for me years ago, and my sweater was a gift from Mr. Bennet, so they are not just warm clothes, but also nice things that show me that my humans care about me.

I don't know if I am forgetting anything, so I will just say that I am lucky to have a lot of good things to be thankful for :D

A lot of very famous humans have been dying lately :(

First came the big guy with the friendly face and the BIG, BIG LAUGH. I guess he was most famous for being friends with a funny guy who had his own television show called "The Tonight Show".

Then, a pretty lady died. I'm not sure if she was a detective, or if she just played one on TV.

Then, a skinny singer from Indiana died. I think most people think he is the most famous of the bunch. He had lots of songs and a bunch of animal friends at a really fancy house.

But to me, the most famous and tragic one was Billy Mays, the king of infomercials. For those of you who don't know, my favorite TV shows are the Weather Channel, Animal Planet, and Infomercials. And Billy Mays always had a good infomercial. He cleaned things with Oxi Clean and Orange Glo, and he ALWAYS got the stains out. Always!! He sold things to fix what was broken and clean what was dirty and chop food and do yard work. He smiled a lot and talked in a loud and proud voice about whatever it was that he was selling. There was a nice tribute here with embedded YouTube links to some of his best work. Billy Mays was a virtuoso of the infomercial, and I will miss his happy face on the television :(

I just don't understand the whole "humans dying" thing. It's not fair :(

At least I still have Ron Popeil for infomercials. But he doesn't have half of Billy's enthusiasm. But then again, I think he was the pioneer of the genre, and he coined the phrase "IT SLICES! IT DICES!".

Signs of spring/summer: [24 Apr 2009|06:52pm]
1- It is warm enough that I have removed my sweater and my little hat.
2- All the windows are open in the apartment.
3- My human has a sunburn. WHEN WILL SHE LEARN?!

Oh, AND!! My Sheila and her father are going to a baseball game tomorrow, and I am invited to go along!!

A trip to Florida! [10 Mar 2009|04:24pm]
My human took me and Joey to play in the sand in Florida!

Photos!Collapse )

We had lots of fun in Florida enjoying the warmer weather. Ohio no longr has snow, but is still cold in a yucky way. There is a lot of rain, too. I keep waiting for that day when the weather psychics forecast nice warm, dry air :)

[ mood | excited ]

Breaking news:

There is a new camel on Livejournal, and he is called Humphrey, too! How cool! Humphreys of the world, UNITE!! :D I'm very excited.

In other news, my human and her boyfriend human are going to Florida, and I have a standing invitation to go on vacation with them. We will be flying on an airplane. I am getting better with that. For a while, I hated airports because I had a bad experience with the TSA. I was in my Sheila's bag, and the uniformed guy pulled me out and squeezed my hump! So, I refused to go on airplanes any more. But about a year and a half ago, I was invited to Florida by my Sheila's boyfriend human, and I couldn't turn that down. I have come to learn that travelling is very fun and worth the possible indignity of hump-squeezes.

My Sheila got flowers for Valentine's Day; I may have eaten one or two of them. But then I rearranged the remaining flowers and I don't think she has noticed that any are missing.

Oh, it's been so long since I've updated! I got the BEST Christmas present: a Magic Bullet Mixer!!!!! I have wanted one forever and I used to watch the infomercial every time it came on. Well, I FINALLY got one and my human and I made milkshakes. Bliss :)

So, WELCOME NEW HUMPHREY!!! and maybe I will remember to pester my human to let me post more often :)

My Sheila and I did something fun tonight!

Halloween fun!Collapse )

Now, what the massacre of a gourd has to do with Halloween, I have no idea. But it sure was fun!

Look! Up in the sky! [12 Aug 2008|05:15pm]
This week started off kind of weird.

Sidney, our bullfrog friend, is a Webkinz. And he came to live with us last October. Now, those Webkinz guys have all sorts of fun things that they can do on the internet in their own little world. There's animation so a little frog on the screen (who looks just like Sidney does in real life) can have his own room with furniture and toys and stuff. And food.

For some reason, my human had signed Sidney up for this, but they never played it together. (She says that the computer at home was too slow, and then she just didn't get around to trying it again.) But the other day, they got online and started playing for the first time. They seemed to like it, and they were having fun, and I'm happy for that, but I felt left out. I am a Beanie Buddy, not a Webkinz, and I have been around since before Webkinz were invented! So there's no animated camel on the screen.

Seriously. I'm glad that Sheila and Sidney like it. But I felt like I was less important, and like maybe my human wouldn't like me as much any more because I couldn't play the game with her :( And they played it Sunday and Monday, and I just kind of watched from the bed.

But I should never have doubted my human. Nope. I am still her special camel. Here's how I know:

Last night, the other toys and I were standing in the window watching the Perseid Meteor Shower. It looks like the stars are falling out of the sky, but really, it's big rocks falling through the atmosphere and burning up on their way in. Either way, it's a pretty spectacular thing. There's a bright light that shoots across the sky, and you can only see it for a couple of seconds, and it doesn't happen very often, but I guess sometimes a lot of them happen all at once, like last night. (Astronomer humans know when it's coming.)

So, when my human came back to the room after work, she knew about the meteor shower, and she said, "Humph, do you want to come outside with me and watch them?"

Boy, did I!!!

She took me out, and it was kind of cool out there, because our boat was in the middle of Lake Superior. So she let me climb inside her sweatshirt so I could stay warm, and we walked up to the bow, and we watched the meteors! I was so excited that I forgot to count them. I wanted to take photos, but they go away too quickly, and you never know when they are coming in the first place. So here's a photo I found on the internet:

That's kind of what it's like. But only for a second or two, and then they're gone! My human says that we were in a very good place to watch the meteors, because out in the lake is far away from city lights, which makes it harder to see the real lights in the sky. Plus, the weather was nice and the sky was not cloudy.

Not only did I get to see something really special in the sky, but I also learned that my human still loves me even if I can't play on Webkinz with her :)

I never posted any photos of the two new camels in my herd! This photo was taken back in January, I think. From the left, we have Hector (the camel with the yellow hat), Little Humphrey (the little camel who looks a lot like me), Joey (the little grey camel with the long nose), and me, Humph. We are reading a book about camels, to teach the new guys about their heritage.

My human never lets me update. But I have taken control of the computer this morning!

Hey, a few days ago was Leap Day. We spent the whole day leaping, and we had a special honoree, Sidney. (He is a frog.) Apparently humans, being the mathematical geniuses that they are, have to add an extra day to the year once in a while so as not to throw the cosmos out of whack. And on that day, we get to hop and skip and bounce and jump and leap! Those humans... sometimes they're A-OK :)

We have had lots of yucky snow lately. I can't wait for the weather to get better. Actually, today is supposed to be pretty nice, but with a 90% chance of yuck tomorrow. At least, that's what the weather psychics say. I wonder if being a weather psychic is something you learn at school, or if it's some kind of innate ability.

Well, I have to herd my human into getting ready to leave. We are going on a trip today! We will still be in Ohio but in a different part. I guess Ohio is bigger than I think because we drive and drive, but we are still in it. I wish she would let *me* drive...

I have to wake my human up in a minute or two and let her know that the internet is working. But in the meantime, I wanted to say that I saw *the best program ever* on Animal Planet the other day. It was called Camels' Empire and it was all about different kinds of camels, from prehistoric camel ancestors to modern day dromedaries, bactrians, and South American humpless camel relatives like guanacos, vicuñas, and alpacas.

Oh, what a wonderful, wonderful hour that was :D

My human has been feeling a little glum lately, but I think the tide is turning because today she bought something very special that can't help but cheer her up. I think I'm going to like having him around too!

Our boat is in Detroit, but it doesn't sound like we are unloading our cargo. Something must be wrong. :(

I got to eat a little bit of honey the other day. It was really good, but now my mouth is all sticky and my human is irritated with me. How was I to know how sticky it was?

By the way, does anyone know if that foul Marmite stuff is a recognized sore throat remedy?

It is cold and snowy now in most of the places our boat goes to. This season is hell on a camel, I tell you.

Oh, tonight is the first day of Hanukkah, and I am teaching Sidney how to sing the dreidel song. This is proving somewhat difficult as I mostly only know the chorus. Hanukkah actually started last night, but there was a little bit of confusion with this darn Gregorian calendar, so I only realized that just now :( I guess since the sun has set, it is technically the second day of Hanukkah.

The other night I watched a great documentary about a reindeer named Rudolph, who saved Christmas! There are a lot of educational programs on at this time of year.

I hope everyone is warm and safe!

My person seldom lets me use the computer :(

I dressed up in my bumblebee costume for Halloween, and I got candy and chewing gum!

The weather has been rough on the Great Lakes. This boat shakes a lot! But I think we are safe out here. It's just, sometimes I have to make a blanket fort and sit in the middle of the bed, or I am afraid that I will fall out! And it's getting colder. I have seen some snow out the porthole. I am wearing my hat and my little sweater.

My human let me help clean the room! I did the stuff under the bed. It was dusty down there O_o

Not much in the way of news. We are sailing on!!

My human and I (and Sidney the frog) are back on the boat! Sidney stowed away, but I don't think the human minds him being here.

It's so cold here! Either the human needs to do something about the heat situation, or she needs to buy a magic plug-in blanket like at home. I am wearing my hat and my little sweater, and I'm still cold.

I brought my Halloween costume, but I am not sure if anyone on this boat will give me candy. I got some last year from Mr. Waldo and from Pig's friend Dave, but I don't know if the guys on this boat know much about small camels and Halloween candy. We shall see.

How is everyone?

I am in Nova Scotia with the two strange humans! They have been running around like crazy and doing that geocaching stuff. Ho-hum. But they seem to be having fun, and if that's what they like, then good! I have just been hanging out with my buddy BooBoo and playing in the park across the street from Zero's house. There are geocaches there, too. I can smell them. Don't tell my human that I sniffed one out ;)

For once I managed to get through an airport without any traumatic incidents, but there's always the way home. I do not like the airport, but the airplane is OK. I prefer boats.

The ocean up here is the same ocean I saw in Florida, but it's much colder up here. Florida is a good climate for camels. Nova Scotia is like Ohio, I think. It seems that I would need my sweater if I stayed up here.

Vacations are fun!
